Don Bosco &

the Preventive System

Saint John Bosco is known as the “father and teacher of the young.” His way towards sanctity was paved by his commitment to the education and evangelization of the youth, especially those who are poor. He started a vast movement of people beginning with consecrated priests and brothers who would continue this noble and sacred mission.

Don Bosco is the endearing name that resounds in every school Saint John Bosco established in Italy. That was how the youth call him and it is up to this very day the brand carried by the schools that follow the Preventive System of Education that Saint John Bosco espoused in his time which remains to be the pedagogy used until today. The Preventive System has three pillars: reason, religion, & rapport (loving-kindness). It is a movement against the Repressive, more so violent, System prevalent in education during the period of the Industrial Revolution. The pedagogy of Don Bosco was prophetic and effective that it was praised even during his lifetime. Saint John Bosco himself among the pedagogues of his time, in the 19th century. For almost two centuries, the Salesians of Don Bosco have successfully brought this pedagogy wherever they were sent, in Italy and around the world. There is a conscious effort to make this Salesian pedagogy perennial. Fast-forward to today, the work of Saint John Bosco is continued in 134 countries with 3,299 basic, technical, and informal schools, and 256 higher education institutions.

It is in this framework of Salesian Preventive System that we shall present ARISE. The first part will deal with Reason, outlining the modes of learning delivery and academic policies. The second part is Religion with the presentation of our pastoral program and CLE. Finally, the third part is Rapport or Loving Kindness, which will deal with our health and wellness guidelines, and the discipline and decorum of our Bosconians.
