Reason

Don Bosco Tarlac adapted the Blended Learning and Full Online Distance Learning (ODL) paradigm in educating and evangelizing the young to become Good Christians and Upright Citizens. The paradigm considers first and foremost the health and safety of the Educative Pastoral Community. Blended Learning and Full Online Learning are constructivist approaches providing varied learning experiences.

MELCs (Most Essential Learning Competencies)

In reference to DepEd Memorandum DM-CI-2020-000 entitled, “Clarification on the Use of Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) and Other Related Issues”, the MELCs shall serve as one of the primary references in determining and facilitating learning approaches that are best suited to the learners while adapting to the challenges posed by COVID 19. Hence for this SY 2022-23, the MELCs will still be the main reference for curriculum implementation.

I. Modes and Nature of Learning Modalities for Implementation

Blended Learning includes face-to-face (in-campus) interactions with online learning. Blending face-to-face learning with active learning assignments and online learning activities facilitates interactions between (a) student to student, (b) student to teacher, and (c) student to the tool. It also promotes lifelong learning through the developed skill of “discovering” information utilizing online activities, while also increasing interactive skills with a variety of others and enhancing engagement.

Face-to-Face Learning activity refers to in-person activities, including physical classroom interaction and implementation of instructions. This allows live collaboration between and among the teacher and learners. This is implemented when there is nothing that poses risk to the learner’s health and well-being and with the observation of physical distancing and all the minimum health protocols as directed by the Department of Health (DOH) and Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF).

Online Learning is a type of remote learning where the class is conducted in real-time. In a synchronous class, the teacher and students interact on an online platform. It is facilitating learning at the same time, platform and pace. Genyo and Quipper are the platforms to be used for this learning.

Synchronous

Refers to a scheduled real-time online learning activity. This mode of learning enables teachers to explain a particular concept or demonstrate a skill to a group of students at an exact time. Real-time synchronous learning activities often involve online chats and videoconferencing.

Asynchronous

Refers to any online learning activity which can be done by a group of students independently at different times without being engaged in a real-time communication. This mode of learning enables students to do their learning activities without specific time intervals. Students can actually set their own timeframes of learning within a time boundary, giving themselves more flexibility.

II. Composition of Learning Activities

Learning activities for each day shall be composed of a learning period, independent work, and consultation period.

Learning period – This period is where the teachers provide inductive or deductive instruction. The teacher presents the lesson for the day in the most appropriate mode.

Offline independent work period – This period is where the teachers provide students with independent practice exercises or quick assessments of the concepts and skills they have learned from the given instructions and/or materials.

Online consultation period – This period is where the teachers invite or make an appointment with the students to accommodate clarifications about their lessons and independent tasks. Teachers may accommodate individual students or groups of students together at the same time.

III. Application of Learning Modalities

The following are the learning modalities implemented:

Rotation Model Blended Learning (RMBL) that is Limited Face-to-Face

This is a combination of limited face-to-face and online distance learning. Rotational Model Blended Learning offers the following:

Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Gadgets

These are the LMS which Don Bosco Tarlac chose as platforms for the online delivery of learning.

Here are some skills that are required from Bosconians to maximize the use of the LMS and learning gadgets that they have:

  1. Connect to the Internet to access websites or search for information/data

  2. Take pictures and videos (Camera)

  3. Participate in video calls and online discussions (Camera, Microphone)

  4. Create documents and presentations

  5. Screen capture

  6. G Suite or Google Workspace for Education (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Spreadsheet).

Appropriate training is given to students for these skills side-by-side their classroom instruction.

IV. Policies On The Implementation of The Learning Modalities

On Face-to-Face In-person Classes

  1. Strict implementation of the Implementing Rules and Regulations on Limited face-to-face will be enforced.

  2. Students who will participate in face-to-face classes shall be required to submit their parents' consent form. This shows that they agree to observe health standards not just in school, but also at home and during travel, as well as the responsibility to immediately disclose any onset of symptoms or known exposure by any member of the household. In such instances, the student shall not be sent to school until the household incident is resolved.

On Pure Online Synchronous Activities

  1. Routine activities must be observed. (Opening and Closing Prayers, Checking of Attendance, and Giving of Reminders)

  2. A Summative Test must be given at the end of the implementation of the lesson. It must be administered on a definite schedule, and its announcement must be done two to three days before its administration.

  3. Performance Tasks (PeTa) output must be submitted online. If group PeTa is not possible, individual PeTa is encouraged. PeTa must be submitted and labeled properly. (Subject, Grade, Section, Name, and Teacher).

Grading System

All grades will be based on the weighted raw score of the learners’ summative assessments. The minimum grade needed to pass specific learning is 75 in the report card.

Quarterly Grade. In a grading period, there are three Summative Tests (to be recorded in both Written Work, Performance Tasks of the student, and Quarterly Exams). There are instances for students to produce Written Work and to demonstrate what they know and can do through Performance Tasks. There is no required number of written work and performance tasks, but these must be spread out and used to assess the learners’ skills after each unit has been taught.

Weight of the Components: Weight distribution of the Summative Assessment Components per Learning Area:

For SHS

Final Grade. Quarterly Grades (QG) produces the Final Grade.

General Average. The General Average is computed by dividing the sum of all final grades by the total number of learning areas. Each learning area has equal weight.

For Grades 1-12

Make-up Assessments. The school prioritizes essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competences in its curriculum. Therefore, it is important for students to be able to demonstrate mastery of them by going through every single assessment. In case a student misses an assessment for valid reasons, he will be allowed to make-up for it. This is to ensure proof that what was missed has actually been mastered or has been understood sufficiently.

On Submissions

Deadlines. Submission of work varies depending on the nature of the task and the pace of the lesson. Short outputs that may be accomplished within the session, may be submitted during the same day. However, submission dates may be spread out within the week as the teacher sees fit.

Late Submissions. Formative measures such as informing parents through email and diary (eDiary and/or iDiary) and other means of communication will be employed whenever students fail to comply with schoolwork and submit school requirements late.

CLASS SIZE

For the implementation of Blended Learning Modality, Don Bosco Tarlac follows the recommendation of IATF on social distancing and shall implement a reduced class size maintaining a distance of one meter apart. This is in accordance with the COVID-19 infection prevention and control measures.
